Amazon Nova Premier
Amazon · USA · 2025
Amazon's first frontier-class model and its designated teacher: a million-token window built to train cheaper models, switched off on 14 September 2026.
Amazon Nova Premier reached general availability on 30 April 2025 as the top rung of the first Nova ladder — the multimodal model for complex reasoning, long documents, large codebases and multistep agentic work. It reads text, images and video, writes text only, carries a one-million-token context window and returns up to 25,000 tokens. Its knowledge cutoff is October 2024, and reasoning is supported. What set Premier apart from rival flagships was not a benchmark claim but a job description. Amazon positioned it explicitly as a teacher: through Bedrock Model Distillation, Premier's behaviour could be distilled into cheaper, faster versions of Nova Pro, Lite and Micro for a specific task. That is why the model was never fine-tunable itself and never offered provisioned throughput — it was the source, not the product. It ran only in the US East (N. Virginia) region and AWS GovCloud (US-West), reaching Ohio and Oregon through cross-region inference. The profile is now a lifecycle document. Amazon's Bedrock model card marks Premier as Legacy with an end-of-life date of 14 September 2026, the same day Nova Sonic goes dark; Nova Canvas and Nova Reel follow on 30 September 2026. The successor generation, announced at re:Invent on 2 December 2025, ships a single general model to the public — Nova 2 Lite — while the more capable Nova 2 Pro stayed in preview for customers of Amazon Nova Forge. One dating note for readers comparing sources: Amazon's own Bedrock model card lists a launch date of 31 October 2025, which reflects the revision catalogued in Bedrock rather than the model's public debut in April 2025.
