Aya Expanse 8B

Aya Expanse 8B is one of two models Cohere Labs published on 24 October 2024 as the third stage of its Aya programme. The first stage, Aya 101, spread capacity across 101 languages; the second, Aya 23, narrowed the set to 23 and deepened each one; Aya Expanse kept those 23 languages and rebuilt the recipe around three techniques the lab describes as data arbitrage, preference training against multilingual judges, and merging of separately trained checkpoints. The 8B variant weighs 8,028,033,024 parameters - the same count, to the parameter, as Aya 23 8B, which places both on the same backbone and makes the difference between them purely a matter of training. What the release does not include is a hosted endpoint. Cohere's own model documentation lists only the 32B sibling as an API model; the 8B exists as weights and nothing else, which makes the licence the deciding constraint for anyone considering it. Those weights carry CC BY-NC 4.0 together with the lab's acceptable use policy, so no commercial use is granted at any scale, and the repository is gated: an account and acceptance of the terms come before the download. Uptake nonetheless remains the strongest in the family two years on - 13,596 downloads in the thirty days to 18 August 2026 and 443 likes, more than any other Aya repository including the newer vision models.
