Cohere Command R+ 08-2024
Cohere · Canada · 2024
The August 2024 refresh of Cohere's 104-billion-parameter flagship: same size, same hardware, a sixth off the price and faster answers.
Command R+ 08-2024 is the second and final version of Cohere's Command R+ line, published on 30 August 2024 alongside the refreshed Command R. Unlike its smaller sibling, which shrank in the same release, this model kept all 104 billion parameters and the same hardware footprint. What changed was speed: Cohere reports roughly 50 percent higher throughput and 25 percent lower latency than the April version. The price came down with it, from 3.00 to 2.50 dollars per million input tokens and from 15.00 to 10.00 per million output — a sixth off input and a third off output for a model that was, on the vendor's own account, strictly better. That put Command R+ 08-2024 at exactly the price Cohere would later charge for Command A, its 2025 flagship. The upgrades follow the same list as the Command R refresh: better judgement about when a tool is needed at all, closer adherence to system-message instructions, stronger structured-data handling, improved citation quality with the option to turn citations off, and refusal rather than invention when a question cannot be answered. Safety modes arrived here too, through the safety_mode parameter with STRICT and CONTEXTUAL settings. Cohere also states this version was trained on data through February 2023. The context window remains 128,000 tokens, multi-step agentic tool use remains the model's headline capability, and the weights sit on Hugging Face under CC BY-NC 4.0 — free to inspect, not free to deploy commercially. The model is still listed as live in August 2026, and was the recommended migration target when the original Command R+ was deprecated in September 2025.
