It shares its skeleton with GLM-4-32B-0414 exactly — 61 layers, 6,144 hidden units, 48 attention heads over 2 key-value heads — and everything that separates the two models happened after pre-training: a cold start on long chains of thought, then extended reinforcement learning on mathematics, code and logic, followed by a round of general reinforcement learning driven by pairwise ranking feedback. The model does not decide whether to think. Its chat template injects an opening thinking tag into the first line of every prompt, so deliberation is enforced rather than optional, and the publisher instructs users to strip the hidden reasoning from the conversation history before the next turn. The recommended generation limit is 30,000 new tokens — set that high explicitly to leave room for the thinking that the user never sees. That is a useful number for anyone budgeting inference cost: the visible answer is a small fraction of what the model actually generates. Context is the one place where the model is smaller than its reputation. The released weights set the window at 32,768 tokens, and the publisher's own guidance is to switch on YaRN context extension once an input passes 8,192 tokens — a workaround with a documented cost on short texts, not a native long-context design. Two things are worth stating plainly. First, this profile carries no benchmark figures, because Z.ai published the model's results only as chart images with no numbers attached; there is nothing to quote that would not be a reading off a bar. Second, GLM-Z1-32B-0414 is absent from the company's current price list — the sibling base model is still sold at ten cents per million tokens, but the reasoning variant is now a download and nothing else. That is the visible trace of a broader shift: by 2026 Z.ai, like most of its competitors, had folded reasoning back into its main models as a setting instead of shipping it as a separate product. The branch still has some life outside the API, though — better than 22,000 downloads a month, a year and a half after release.
