GPT-5.2-Codex
OpenAI · USA · 2026
The coding model GPT-5.3-Codex replaced six weeks later, at exactly the same price - and which OpenAI shut down entirely on 23 July 2026.
GPT-5.2-Codex is an upgraded version of GPT-5.2 tuned for agentic coding in Codex and similar environments. It reached OpenAI's API on 14 January 2026 and held the top of the coding range for six weeks, until GPT-5.3-Codex arrived on 24 February. Both models share the same shape: text and image in, text out, a 400,000-token context window with up to 272,000 input and 128,000 output tokens, four reasoning effort levels from low to xhigh, and the same 31 August 2025 knowledge cutoff. They also share the same price - $1.75 per million input tokens and $14 per million output - which OpenAI shows side by side in the comparison table on its own model pages. Choosing the older model therefore saves nothing. On 3 February 2026 OpenAI reported that GPT-5.2 and GPT-5.2-Codex began running about 40% faster after work on its inference stack, with the model and its weights unchanged. Correction to the original entry: the model is no longer on sale at all. Access to gpt-5.2-codex was shut down on 23 July 2026, in the group withdrawal announced on 22 April 2026, with GPT-5.6 Sol named as the substitute. It survived just over six months in the API - and the price it shared with GPT-5.3-Codex is now only of historical interest.
