GPT-5 nano
OpenAI · United States · 2025
The cheapest model OpenAI has ever put in the API: five cents per million input tokens, and a 400K window to spend them on.
GPT-5 nano is the bottom tier of the first GPT-5 wave, released on 7 August 2025 with GPT-5 and GPT-5 mini. It is built for summarisation and classification: work where volume matters more than depth and where a wrong answer is cheap to catch. It is unusually generous for its price. The context window is the full 400,000 tokens of the generation, output reaches 128,000, and it accepts images as well as text — capabilities that a year earlier were reserved for flagship models. Pricing is $0.05 per million input tokens and $0.40 per million output, with cached input at half a cent per million. That is one twenty-fifth of what GPT-5 charged for input on the same day, from the same context window. The knowledge cutoff is 31 May 2024. OpenAI announced on 11 June 2026 that gpt-5-nano shuts down on 11 December 2026, with GPT-5.6 Luna named as the replacement.
