Mistral Large 2.1, catalogued as version 24.11 and released on 21 November 2024, was the last revision of the model that carried Mistral's flagship name before the Medium line took over. It refined the July 2024 release rather than replacing it, and the improvements were pointed: better reasoning and markedly better function calling, including parallel and sequential tool calls, which was the capability the whole industry was racing to make reliable that winter. The design decision worth remembering is the parameter count. At 123 billion parameters with a 128,000-token context window, the model was deliberately sized for single-node inference — one machine, high throughput, no multi-node orchestration. In a period when frontier capability generally meant a cluster, Mistral's pitch was that a company could self-host something close to the top of the market on hardware it could actually buy. It supported dozens of languages and dozens of programming languages. Weights were published on Hugging Face under the Mistral Research License, with a commercial licence sold separately — the same arrangement as its multimodal sibling Pixtral Large, released three days earlier on the same 24.11 stack. Mistral deprecated both on 27 February 2026 and switched both off on 31 May 2026, directing users to Mistral Medium 3.5. That migration path is itself the story of Mistral's repositioning: the flagship tier was not replaced by a bigger flagship, but by a mid-tier model that had caught up.
