The only way to reach the model inside ChatGPT from the API — and the one version you cannot pin.
chat-latest is an alias, not a model. It points to whatever Instant model currently answers inside ChatGPT, and OpenAI states plainly that the underlying snapshot will be updated regularly. For a developer that is the whole story: you get the model hundreds of millions of people talk to, but you get it as a moving target. Every versioned member of this line is gone. gpt-5-chat-latest and gpt-5.1-chat-latest were shut down on 23 July 2026, gpt-5.2-chat-latest and gpt-5.3-chat-latest on 10 August 2026, and chatgpt-4o-latest was removed on 17 February 2026. chat-latest is what remains, and it carries no version number to pin. The specification is that of a current flagship rather than a light chat model: a 1,050,000-token window is not on offer, but 400,000 tokens are, with up to 272,000 of input and 128,000 of output — eight times the output ceiling of the versioned Chat models it replaced. Knowledge runs to 31 August 2025. Pricing is USD 5 per million input tokens and USD 30 per million output, with cached input at USD 0.50 — figures identical to the GPT-5.6 Sol flagship, and four times the input price of gpt-5.1-chat-latest. OpenAI itself recommends GPT-5.6 for production work and treats this alias as the way to test chat behaviour, not to build on it.
