OpenAI ChatGPT-4o
OpenAI · United States · 2024
The first alias that let developers call the model ChatGPT itself was running.
chatgpt-4o-latest was the alias for the GPT-4o snapshot used inside ChatGPT, and the model that established the pattern: a chat-tuned version of a flagship, sold separately from the API model of the same name. The two differed in behaviour rather than in specification — a 128,000-token window, a 16,384-token output ceiling and a knowledge cutoff of 1 October 2023. Its price stayed at the GPT-4o launch level of USD 5 per million input tokens and USD 15 per million output, even after the API GPT-4o was cut to USD 2.50 and USD 10. Buyers paid double for the conversational tuning, and the card lists no cached-input rate at all. OpenAI announced the deprecation on 18 November 2025 and removed the alias from the API on 17 February 2026, naming gpt-5.1-chat-latest as the replacement — a snapshot that was itself shut down five months later. Readers tracing the lineage should note the naming: this profile covers the ChatGPT alias, not GPT-4o, which has its own entry and its own shutdown date of 23 October 2026.
