Daybreak Blue is an alias, and the honest way to describe it is administrative rather than technical. Its default snapshot is gpt-5.6-sol, OpenAI's frontier general-purpose model, and the specification is that model's: a 1,050,000-token window with up to 922,000 tokens of input and 128,000 of output, reasoning-token support, text and image input, and a knowledge cutoff of 16 February 2026. What differs is the calibration of the safeguards. A general-purpose model trained to refuse assistance with attacks will also refuse a defender asking about the same attack, and Daybreak Blue exists to move that line for people whose job is defence. Access is not open: the model requires separate approval and provisioning through OpenAI's Daybreak programme, and the model card publishes no price, pointing instead to the general pricing page. It is the milder half of a pair. Daybreak Red, aliased to the purpose-trained gpt-5.6-cyber, goes further and is aimed at authorised vulnerability research. Blue is the frontier generalist with the brakes adjusted; Red is a specialist. For readers of this catalogue the useful distinction is that neither is a new set of weights — both are existing models behind an approval process.
