GPT-4o Search Preview

GPT-4o with the web attached — a separate model number for what later became a checkbox.
GPT-4o Search Preview shipped on 11 March 2026's predecessor date — 11 March 2025 — alongside computer-use-preview and the Responses API. Its job was narrow: run web search queries from the Chat Completions API and write answers grounded in what it found, with citations. The economics were unusual for OpenAI. The token price matched plain GPT-4o exactly — 2.50 dollars per million input, 10 per million output — but every search carried an additional per-call fee, so the model was cheap to talk to and expensive to use as intended. It kept GPT-4o's 128,000-token context window and 16,384-token output ceiling, with an October 2023 knowledge cutoff that the search tool existed to paper over. It lived in Chat Completions only. Developers who moved to the Responses API used the built-in web search tool instead, which worked with any model, and that made a dedicated search model redundant. OpenAI announced the deprecation on 22 April 2026 and shut the model down on 23 July 2026, on the same day as its mini twin and as computer-use-preview, naming gpt-5.6-terra as the substitute.
