Shut down in the API on the same day as its predecessor, while its own model card still invited developers to try it.

gpt-5.1-chat-latest was the ChatGPT snapshot of GPT-5.1, released alongside the model on 13 November 2025. Technically it was a near copy of its predecessor: a 128,000-token window, a 16,384-token output ceiling, no reasoning tokens, knowledge to 30 September 2024, and the same price of USD 1.25 per million input tokens and USD 10 per million output. Its fate is the more interesting part. OpenAI deprecated it on 22 April 2026 together with gpt-5-chat-latest and shut both down on the same day, 23 July 2026 — meaning the newer snapshot was granted no more life than the one it had replaced eight months earlier. Its published model card still describes it as the snapshot currently used in ChatGPT and invites developers to test chat improvements on it, a wording the deprecation table has overtaken. The distinction matters for readers: the API alias is gone, which is not the same as the model disappearing from ChatGPT. What ended on 23 July 2026 was the ability to call this particular chat behaviour from outside, and to pin it to a version.
