It differed from the API GPT-5 in the ways that matter to a chat product rather than to a benchmark: no reasoning-token mode, a 128,000-token window instead of 400,000, and a 16,384-token output ceiling. Its price matched API GPT-5 exactly — USD 1.25 per million input tokens, USD 0.125 cached, USD 10 per million output — so what buyers paid for was not cheapness but the specific conversational behaviour tuned for ChatGPT. Knowledge ran to 30 September 2024. OpenAI announced its deprecation on 22 April 2026 inside a batch of thirteen legacy snapshots, and shut it down on 23 July 2026 with GPT-5.6 Sol named as the replacement. Under the company's own policy that made it a specialised variant entitled to three months of notice, not the six months given to generally available models — the shortest protection in the catalogue, applied to the line closest to the consumer product.
