A robot brain trained on a simulated universe of 100,000 different bodies — and able to walk a robot it has never seen.
Skild Brain is the robotics foundation model built by Skild AI, a Pittsburgh company founded by researchers from Carnegie Mellon. Its founding claim is unusual in the field: rather than a policy tuned to one machine, Skild trains a single model to control a whole population of bodies. In the work published on 24 September 2025 the company generated a universe of 100,000 different robots and trained one brain across all of them for what it describes as a millennium of simulated time. The robots used in the public demonstrations were deliberately excluded from that training set, so the model meets them zero-shot. The architecture is hierarchical: a low-frequency high-level policy for manipulation and navigation feeds a high-frequency low-level policy that turns those commands into joint angles and motor torques. Skild argues this is what separates a genuine robotics foundation model from what it calls "a VLM in disguise" — a vision-language model with under 1% real robot data added on top, which generalises semantically but lacks physical common sense. Because collecting real trajectories at foundation-model scale is impossible in practice, Skild pre-trains on large-scale simulation and internet video of humans, then post-trains on targeted real-world data for each customer deployment. What the company demonstrates is resilience rather than benchmark scores. Woken on an unfamiliar quadruped, the brain misidentifies it as a small humanoid and falls; prompted with that failed attempt as context, it succeeds on the third try — in-context learning of the kind familiar from language models. With a limb shortened, four degrees of freedom removed and the body geometry altered, it flails for seven or eight seconds and then discovers that large swings at the thigh joint restore locomotion, where a single-robot specialist controller flips over. With knees locked in software, turning a quadruped into a three-legged machine, it shifts its weight backwards and walks. Skild AI raised a $300M Series A in July 2024 (Lightspeed, Coatue, SoftBank and Jeff Bezos) and a $1.4bn Series C led by SoftBank on 14 January 2026, valuing the company above $14bn. In March 2026 it announced deployment partnerships with ABB Robotics, Universal Robots and NVIDIA, and in April 2026 it acquired Zebra Technologies' robotics division — the former Fetch Robotics — to put the brain into warehouses. The model is closed: no weights, no checkpoints and no public API. It reaches users only inside Skild's own robot platforms for security and inspection, mobile manipulation and autonomous packing.
