Sora 2 generates minute-scale video with synchronized dialogue and sound effects, obeying physics well enough to simulate believable object dynamics. Shipped with a social app and 'cameo' insertion of real people with consent controls, it pushed AI video from demo to mainstream creative medium — and into the center of copyright debates. OpenAI is winding the product down in two steps. The consumer web and app experiences were discontinued on 26 April 2026. The developer side follows on 24 September 2026, when the Videos API and every sora-2 variant — sora-2, sora-2-pro and their dated snapshots — are switched off; OpenAI's deprecation list names no replacement model. The company opened an export page for users to download their material and states that data associated with a Sora account will be permanently deleted once any final export window has passed. No public reason has been given for the shutdown.
