Melia 1

Melia 1 is the multilingual transcription model of Speechmatics, a Cambridge company that has been working on speech recognition since 2006. It was released on 17 June 2026 as a production preview, joining rather than replacing the two models the company already sold, Standard and Enhanced. An update on 14 July 2026 cut its English word error rate by a further 2.4 percent in relative terms. The point of the model is code switching. Standard and Enhanced require the caller to name the language, or to run a separate identification step first; a recording in which a speaker moves from English to Urdu mid-sentence comes back from them with gaps. Melia 1 takes no language setting at all: it covers the 55-plus languages Speechmatics supports, detects them as they appear, and returns one continuous transcript with the languages labelled. The manufacturer says the model is strongest exactly where such speakers are hardest to follow — on accented speech carried over from one language into another. On FLEURS, an open benchmark of read speech in many languages, Speechmatics reports that Melia beats the best model of each rival on 91 percent of languages against Deepgram, 91 percent against Microsoft and 77 percent against AssemblyAI. These are the manufacturer's own runs against competitors' systems. On its internal tests of noisy single-language audio it reports a 5 percent lower error rate than its own Standard model. The pricing is where the release becomes interesting. Batch transcription with Melia 1 costs 0.129 dollars per hour, against 0.24 dollars for Standard and 0.40 dollars for Enhanced. The company's newest and broadest model is thus roughly half the price of the one most of its customers run, and it openly invites them to move workloads over. The limits are real: Melia 1 works on recordings only, with a live version still in preview, it offers a reduced feature set next to Enhanced, and it is available in the European and American regions but not the Australian one. There is no medical variant, which Enhanced has. The model is closed, sold as a hosted service, and offered as an on-premise GPU container to contract customers.
