Tesla Cybercab

Cybercab is Tesla's first vehicle designed from scratch for driverless operation rather than adapted for it. There is no steering wheel, no pedals and no mirror stalk for a human to take over with: the cabin is two seats, a single central screen and a boot behind them. Doors open upwards, the car charges inductively rather than through a plug, and the whole body was engineered around Tesla's "unboxed" assembly process, in which major modules are built in parallel and joined only at the end. The EPA certification filing (test group TTSLV00.0L1A, certified 26 May 2026) is the first authoritative source for what the car actually is. It documents a single front-mounted permanent-magnet motor of 163 kW (219 hp), a 48 kWh lithium-ion pack at 326 V, and a kerb weight of 1,412 kg — light enough to make it the lightest electric car certified in the United States. Laboratory combined range came out at 418 miles (673 km) unadjusted; applying the EPA's usual correction factor for electric vehicles puts the real-world figure near 293 miles (about 470 km), consistent with Tesla's earlier "close to 300 miles" claim. The first production unit left Gigafactory Texas on 17 February 2026 and volume assembly began that April. Cybercab is not sold to the public: it is built for Tesla's own Robotaxi service, which until now has run on modified Model Y cars. Elon Musk has repeatedly said the vehicle would cost under $30,000 to build, but Tesla publishes no price list for it, and no independent party has verified the figure. The car also depends entirely on Full Self-Driving software clearing regulators in each state — a vehicle with no controls cannot legally be driven by a person if the software is not approved.
