Wingcopter 198

The Wingcopter 198 is the delivery aircraft of the German manufacturer Wingcopter, unveiled on 27 April 2021 and built around a patented tilt-rotor design: the rotors point upwards for vertical take-off and landing and then swivel forward, so the machine cruises on its wing rather than on its propellers. That is what separates it from the multirotors used by most food-delivery operators — it needs no runway, but it covers distances a quadcopter cannot. The manufacturer's current datasheet gives a wingspan of 198 cm (hence the name), a maximum take-off weight of 25 kg, a payload of 4.7 kg, a maximum range of 94 km and a speed of 90 km/h. Those figures are more conservative than the ones quoted at the 2021 launch, when Wingcopter advertised 6 kg over 75 km, up to 110 km with a lighter load and a top speed of 150 km/h; the catalogue follows the datasheet the company publishes today. Safety architecture is the selling point. The aircraft flies on eight motors with eight speed controllers and two batteries, so a failure in the power train does not bring it down, and it carries duplicated airspeed, heading and positioning sensors. Batteries are hot-swappable, which matters for an operator flying repeat missions from a small ground team rather than a depot. Wingcopter's business is long-range beyond-visual-line-of-sight work rather than city takeaway: medical and laboratory logistics, island and rural supply, and — since 2025 — LiDAR surveying flown on the same airframe. The company is pursuing type certification with the American FAA and flies in Europe under EASA's specific-category rules, with operations run in Japan, Brazil, Africa, Mexico and the United States. A triple-drop mechanism, which would let one flight serve three separate addresses, was announced with the aircraft and is still described by the manufacturer as in development.
