Platform 1 is the aircraft that turned drone delivery from a demonstration into public infrastructure. Zipline began flying it in Rwanda in October 2016, carrying blood to district hospitals, and in doing so ran the world's first drone delivery service operating at the scale of an entire country - years before any Western regulator allowed routine deliveries over people. The design is deliberately unlike the multirotors most companies chose. P1 is a small fixed-wing aeroplane of roughly 20 kg, launched from an electric catapult, cruising at around 100 km/h at altitudes of 80 to 120 m, with a service range of about 80 km out and back on one battery. It carries a payload of roughly 1.75 kg - a couple of units of blood, a vaccine cold-box, a snakebite antivenom. It never lands at the destination: it descends to about 20 m, releases the package under a small paper parachute into a target zone around five metres across, and flies home, where it is caught in mid-air by a wire and recovered. Nothing on the ground is needed at the receiving end but a patch of open space, which is precisely why the model worked in places where roads wash out in the rainy season. The medical logic is as important as the engineering. Blood products expire and hospitals cannot stock every type, so rural clinics historically discarded a great deal and still ran out of the rare types. Centralising stock in a distribution centre and flying units on demand in fifteen to thirty minutes changed that arithmetic; the Rwandan model was later extended to Ghana, Nigeria, Kenya and Cote d'Ivoire, and the same platform has served hospital networks in the United States. Zipline has since introduced Platform 2, a hovering aircraft with a tethered delivery droid built for suburban doorstep delivery, but P1 remains in service on the long-range, rough-terrain routes it was designed for. Across both platforms the company reported more than 2.5 million commercial deliveries and over 135 million autonomous commercial miles by mid-2026.
