Zipline Platform 2 (P2 Zip)

Platform 2 is the second-generation delivery system from Zipline, the American company that built its reputation flying blood and medical supplies across Rwanda and Ghana with a fixed-wing aircraft that dropped parcels by parachute. P2, shown in March 2023 and carrying its first commercial customer deliveries from January 2025, is a different machine built for a different problem: dense suburbs and city blocks, where a parachute is not precise enough and a landing is not welcome. The solution is to split the aircraft in two. The Zip itself hovers at around 300 feet and never descends into the delivery site. From its belly it lowers a small droid on a tether - a package carrier with its own thrusters and sensors, which steers itself down to a target roughly one metre across, sets the parcel down and is winched back up. Keeping the propellers hundreds of feet up is what makes the system quiet enough to run over houses, which Zipline compares to wind in leaves rather than a drone overhead. Operationally the aircraft flies up to 70 mph on a direct path, serves a radius of about 10 miles - up to 24 miles one way between docks, recharging at each - and carries a payload of a few kilograms, with insulated pods keeping hot food hot and cold items cold. The company quotes ten-minute deliveries, which is not a claim about top speed but about not sitting in traffic. What separates Zipline from most delivery-drone programmes is that it is a working utility rather than a pilot. The P2 network runs with retail and healthcare customers including Walmart, and health systems continue to sign on - Memorial Hermann in Houston is due to start in 2026. That combination, medical logistics proven in Africa plus consumer delivery in the United States, is the reason this is one of the very few aerial delivery systems worth cataloguing as a product rather than as a demonstration.
