The most ambitious robot production plan in the West is not a humanoid: Neros raises USD 250m to build a million drones a year

Neros announced on 11 August 2026 that it had closed a USD 250 million Series C at a post-money valuation of USD 2.5 billion. The round was co-led by Sequoia Capital and the American Strategic Technology Fund, with Interlagos, Valor Equity Partners, Allen & Company, Thiel Capital, Spark Capital and Figma founder Dylan Field also taking part. The money funds two programmes. Archer AI is a first-person-view airframe with autonomy features the company names as terminal guidance and position hold without GPS — the second matters because satellite navigation is the first thing jammed in any contested airspace. Bandit is an interceptor built to bring down other drones in the Class 2 and Class 3 weight brackets. Both are stated for deployment before the end of 2026. The number worth pausing on is not the valuation but the manufacturing target: one million units a year by 2028. Put beside the rest of the robotics industry, that figure is in a different category entirely. The most-discussed humanoid programmes measure their output in the low thousands — Figure passed a cumulative thousand units of its third-generation robot this summer, and AgiBot, the highest-volume Chinese humanoid maker, reports around fifteen thousand machines built in total across its whole range. Neros is proposing to build more airframes in a fortnight than either company has built since it was founded. That gap says something about the shape of the robot industry rather than about the merits of any one company. Volume follows simplicity and unit cost. An FPV airframe is a frame, four motors, a battery, a camera and a flight controller; it is designed to be cheap because much of it is expendable. A humanoid is dozens of precision actuators, a torque-controlled spine and a supply chain of harmonic drives and force sensors that nobody currently makes in consumer-electronics quantities. The first mass-manufactured robot category in the West will very likely not be the one that walks. The second thing the round marks is where robotics capital is going. Neros builds domestically and sells to the U.S. Army, the Marine Corps and elements of Special Operations Command, plus half a dozen allied states through a British subsidiary. Its pitch to investors is explicitly industrial policy: that Western drone manufacturing at scale does not currently exist and has to be created.
