The most precise arm Universal Robots sells is the smallest one it launched in 2018

Put the whole Universal Robots range side by side and one number refuses to improve with time. Pose repeatability, measured per ISO 9283, is +/-0.03 mm on the UR3e and the UR5e — the two smallest arms of the e-Series, shown at automatica in June 2018. Every machine the company has launched since is rated at +/-0.05 mm or worse: the UR16e of 2019 and the UR10e at +/-0.05 mm, the UR15 of 2025 at +/-0.05 mm, and the heavy UR20 at +/-0.1 mm, three times the figure of an arm now eight years old.
The pattern is not a decline in engineering. It is what reach and payload cost. Longer tubes and heavier joints move a fixed positional error further from the base, and in this family the relationship is almost mechanical: the 500 mm UR3e and 850 mm UR5e hold 30 micrometres, the 900 mm UR16e and 1,300 mm UR10e hold 50, and the 1,750 mm UR20 holds 100.
What makes it worth stating plainly is that the newest products do not escape it. The UR15, introduced in 2025 as the company's fastest arm, matches the 2018 UR10e on repeatability while beating it on speed. Universal Robots has spent seven years adding payload, reach and tool speed; the accuracy ceiling of the small arms has not moved.
For a buyer, that inverts the usual instinct to specify the newest and largest machine that fits the budget. An application defined by where the part is placed — electronics assembly, laboratory handling, screwdriving, dispensing — is best served by the oldest and cheapest arms in the catalogue. Reach is what you buy at the top of the range; precision is what you buy at the bottom.
Two smaller findings sit in the same data sheets. The UR3e is the only arm in the family whose three wrist joints run at 360 degrees per second, twice the rate of everything else, which suits it to twisting work rather than carrying. And the UR5e is the only Universal Robots arm certified for an ISO Class 5 cleanroom; the larger UR10e and UR16e reach only Class 6. In this range, cleanliness and precision both go down as the arm goes up.
