Aurora Innovation, founded in 2017 and led by co-founder Chris Urmson — previously head of Google's self-driving car programme — is the only entry in this catalogue's autonomous vehicle section that moves freight rather than people. It began commercial driverless Class 8 trucking on the Dallas-Houston corridor in 2025, with no human in the cab, and has been widening the map since. On 11 February 2026 Aurora said it had tripled its driverless network to ten routes, including Dallas-Houston, Fort Worth-El Paso, El Paso-Phoenix, Fort Worth-Phoenix and Dallas-Laredo, and reported 250,000 driverless miles as of January 2026 with zero collisions attributed to the Aurora Driver. The Fort Worth-Phoenix lane runs roughly 1,000 miles, well past the length of route that autonomous trucking had previously attempted. Named customers include Hirschbach Motor Lines, Detmar Logistics, Driscoll's and Capital Sand. By the second-quarter business review on 29 July 2026 the total stood at nearly 440,000 driverless miles since launch through 30 June, with a 100 percent on-time record and the same clean collision record, and the company was preparing observer-free operation of its next-generation hardware kit on the International LT truck platform. Highway trucking is a different problem from urban robotaxis — fewer pedestrians and cyclists, but 36 tonnes of vehicle, long stopping distances and hours of monotony where a lapse costs everything. It is also a different business: the customer is a shipper with a freight rate, not a consumer with an app, which is why Aurora is one of the few autonomy companies to talk publicly about pricing per mile. The economics remain brutal. Aurora targets more than 200 driverless trucks in operation by the end of 2026 and an annualised revenue run-rate of USD 80 million, but its second quarter of 2026 showed roughly USD 2 million of revenue against a net loss of about USD 270 million. The safety record is the asset; the profit and loss account is the argument against.
