Aurora's second-generation driverless truck costs half as much to build — and is designed for a million miles

Aurora Innovation launched its second-generation driverless truck on 22 July 2026, and the interesting numbers are not about capability but about cost and durability. Built on the International LT Series tractor, the new truck carries upgraded sensors and more computing power, is designed for a service life of one million miles, and costs roughly half as much to build as the first-generation vehicle. That is the number that matters in autonomous trucking. A robotaxi amortises its hardware over short urban rides; a Class 8 tractor runs hundreds of thousands of miles a year, so the autonomy kit has to survive the truck and be cheap enough not to eat the freight rate. Halving the build cost while extending design life is a direct attack on both sides of that equation. Production is being outsourced: Roush Industries upfits the tractors and is expected to deliver 20 trucks a week to Aurora by the end of 2026, supporting the company's target of about 200 driverless trucks in operation by year end. The new fleet is to be spread across Aurora's ten driverless routes in the US Sun Belt. Two customers announced deployments of the second-generation trucks within the following week — Value Truck on 27 July and Charger Logistics on 28 July. The context is a company that has driven nearly 440,000 driverless miles through 30 June 2026 with no collision attributed to its system, but reported roughly USD 2 million of quarterly revenue against a net loss of about USD 270 million in the second quarter. Aurora is targeting an annualised revenue run-rate of USD 80 million. Cheaper trucks that last longer are the mechanism by which that gap is supposed to close.
