The four-axis desktop arm that put an industrial-style robot on a school desk: 500 g of payload inside a 320 mm radius, on a base the size of a coffee coaster, with swappable heads for gripping, drawing, laser engraving and 3D printing.
The DOBOT Magician is the machine that built Dobot as a brand. Released in August 2016, it took the shape of a scaled-down industrial arm - a rotating base, two linked arm segments and a rotary tool axis - and shrank it until it fitted on a 158 x 158 mm footprint and weighed 3.4 kg, light enough to be carried between classrooms in one hand. Everything in the catalogue that carries the Magician name descends from it, including the six-axis Magician E6 and the mobile Magician Go. The working envelope is deliberately small. Payload is 500 g within a 320 mm reach, and repeatability is quoted at +/-0.2 mm - an order of magnitude looser than Dobot's industrial CRA cobots, and the honest figure for a machine driven by stepper motors rather than servo drives with absolute encoders. The base turns +/-120 degrees at up to 320 deg/s, the two arm joints sweep roughly 95 and 105 degrees at the same speed, and the tool axis spins +/-140 degrees at 480 deg/s. Power comes from a 12 V DC brick fed from ordinary mains, with 78 W drawn at peak. What made the Magician unusual for its price class was the tool interface. The forearm ends in a mount that accepts a suction cup, a parallel gripper, a pen holder, a laser module or an extruder, and the controller exposes two stepper-motor interfaces so a conveyor or a rotating axis can be driven from the same box. Ten configurable I/O ports and a UART line are brought out for electronics projects, and USB is standard while Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are optional modules rather than built-in radios - a distinction Dobot marks with an asterisk on its own specification sheet and that buyers of second-hand units routinely miss. On the software side the arm is deliberately promiscuous: DobotStudio for direct control and drag-to-teach, DobotBlockly and the browser-based DobotLab for block programming, plus Repetier Host and GrblController for the 3D-printing and engraving heads, and a published SDK with a communication protocol and program library for anyone writing their own client. Operating range is quoted from -10 to 60 C, which is broader than most desktop hardware and reflects the industrial parts underneath. The Magician remains in Dobot's education catalogue a decade after launch, sold worldwide through education distributors rather than at a single published list price.
