DOBOT Nova 5

DOBOT Nova 5 is the larger of the two arms that opened Dobot's Nova series in November 2022. It shares the family's design premise - a compact controller and commercial rather than industrial duty - but it is specified around a different job. Dobot describes the 850 mm reach not in terms of a work envelope but in terms of a human body: enough to cover shoulders, neck, back and lower back from a single mounting point during a massage. The company pairs that with its own high-precision force-control algorithm, which is the part that actually matters when the payload is a person. The arm weighs 14 kg, carries 5 kg and repeats to +/-0.05 mm, the same precision as the smaller Nova 2. Tool speed rises to 2 m/s, but every joint is limited to 100 degrees per second, slower per axis than the 135 degrees per second of the 2 kg model - a reasonable trade for a longer, heavier arm working near people. Joint travel is J1 and J4 through J6 at +/-360 degrees, J2 at +/-180 and J3 at +/-160. Construction is aluminium alloy and ABS, rated IP54, working from 0 to 50 degrees Celsius, mountable at any angle, and quoted at 70 dB(A). The bigger structure costs power: 230 W typical and 770 W peak, against 100 W and 250 W for Nova 2. The control side is identical to the rest of the series, which is the point of a series. The same 1.3 kg passively cooled controller, 200 x 120 x 55 mm, runs on 30-60 V DC and provides eight digital inputs and outputs, two analogue inputs and outputs, two Ethernet ports for TCP/IP and Modbus TCP, two USB ports and RS485 for Modbus RTU. The wrist carries two digital I/O channels and its own RS485 line. Teaching is done from a PC or from Android and iOS apps. Dobot also markets Nova 5 for the same unattended retail and food-service work as Nova 2 - mobile coffee carts, robot noodle bars and drink vending - where the extra reach and payload buy a larger service area.
