The long-reach C4: 900 mm instead of 600, the same 4 kg payload, and the price paid in precision — repeatability drops from 0.020 to 0.030 mm.
The C4L is the long-armed member of Epson's six-axis C series, announced alongside the compact C4 on 8 May 2014. Mechanically the two are the same machine with a different forearm, and the comparison between them is the clearest illustration in Epson's catalogue of what reach costs. Horizontal reach grows to 900 mm at the wrist centre and 965 mm at the tool mounting face — half as far again as the C4 — while the payload stays at 1 kg rated and 4 kg maximum. Two figures move the other way: repeatability loosens from +/-0.020 to +/-0.030 mm and the standard cycle stretches from 0.37 to 0.47 seconds. Mass rises only from 27 to 29 kg, because the extra length is forearm, not structure. This trade is a house rule at Epson rather than a law of robotics: the same pattern shows up between the C8 and C8L, whereas some competitors hold repeatability constant across an entire family. Everything else is carried over. Joint travel is identical at +/-170 degrees on the first axis, -160 to +65 on the second, -51 to +225 on the third, +/-200, +/-135 and +/-360 on the wrist; all six axes are braked; motors run 400 W on the main axes and 50 W at the wrist. Standard, ESD and ISO Class 3 cleanroom builds mount on a bench or ceiling, the launch controller was the RC700 with Epson RC+ 7.0, and vision guidance, force sensing and conveyor tracking are optional. The arm is declared to CE, ANSI/RIA R15.06-1999, JIS B 8433 and EN ISO 13849-1, and a later C4LB generation adds SafeSense safety functions.
