Epson's compact six-axis arm: 711 mm of reach, 8 kg maximum payload, 0.02 mm repeatability and a 0.31 s cycle from a 49 kg machine.
The C8 is the compact model in Epson's C series, the company's six-axis line and its answer to the fact that SCARA arms cannot reach around a part. It is a conventional articulated industrial robot: fenced, fast and aimed at machine tending, assembly and inspection cells where a four-axis arm runs out of freedom. Horizontal reach is 711 mm to the wrist centre and 791 mm to the tool mounting face, with a rated payload of 3 kg and a maximum of 8 kg. Repeatability is +/-0.02 mm and a standard cycle with 1 kg takes 0.31 seconds, stretching to 0.39 seconds at 5 kg and 0.48 seconds at the full 8 kg - a useful reminder that a robot's headline cycle time is quoted at its lightest load. The arm weighs 49 kg, or 53 kg in the sealed version. Joint travel is generous for the size: +/-240 degrees on the first axis, -158 to +65 degrees on the second, -61 to +202 on the third, +/-200 on the fourth, +/-135 on the fifth and +/-360 on the sixth, with the wrist axes turning at up to 720 degrees per second. Epson offers a standard IP40 build, an ESD and ISO Class 3 cleanroom version, and an IP67 protected model for wet or dusty work. The controller is the RC700A, and the arm is declared to CE, UL 1740 and ANSI/RIA R15.06-2012. The same platform is sold with longer arms as the C8L at 901 mm and the C8XL at 1400 mm, both carrying the same 8 kg maximum payload. Epson announced the C8 series in July 2016 and in August 2024 added a C-B generation of the same arms with SafeSense safety functions built in.
