HAL Lumbar Type for Labor Support is Cyberdyne's industrial exoskeleton: the same bio-electrical signal control as the company's medical devices, applied to a single problem — the load that lifting puts on the lower back. Sensors on the skin read the wearer's intention to lift, and motors at the hips add torque so that less of the effort passes through the lumbar spine. The stated purpose is preventive rather than therapeutic: fewer work-related back injuries, and longer working hours without fatigue for staff who would otherwise be limited by the weight they can handle. The design is built around being unobtrusive. The unit weighs 3.1 kg with its battery, has three operating buttons and five assistance levels, and runs about 4.5 hours on a charge that takes roughly two hours to replenish. The current HAL-LB03 model, identifiable by its black battery cover, adds IPX4 splash protection and IP5X dust protection, which is what moved the product out of clean indoor work and into outdoor heavy labour; the earlier HAL-LB01 has neither rating. Fit is defined by body measurements rather than height alone — the manufacturer specifies limits for abdominal girth, pelvic width and mid-thigh girth alongside the 140-180 cm and 40-80 kg wearer range. Two details matter for anyone comparing this device with Western industrial exoskeletons. First, it is certified to ISO 13482, the international safety standard for personal care robots, and conforms to the European Machinery Directive — an unusually explicit compliance claim in a product class where most vendors cite neither. Second, and against that, Cyberdyne states plainly that the product is available only in Japan, and that it does not rent HAL devices to individual users.
