The Automower 435X AWD was the first all-wheel-drive robotic mower Husqvarna offered to homeowners, launched in 2019 by a company that had been selling robotic mowers since 1995. Its distinguishing feature is mechanical rather than digital: the machine is built as two bodies joined by a pivot, so all four driven wheels stay on the ground over ruts, roots and ditches, and it keeps working on gradients up to 70 percent (35 degrees) inside the mowing area and 50 percent along the boundary. No competing consumer mower in the catalogue climbs that steeply. The cutting system is deliberately modest - three pivoting razor blades on a 22 cm disc, cutting height set electrically from the app between 3 and 7 cm - because the design assumes continuous mowing rather than one weekly pass. An 8 Ah lithium-ion pack gives 145 minutes of mowing and recharges in 45 minutes, and the machine can be scheduled for up to 24 hours of active time. Husqvarna rates it for lawns of about 0.9 acre, roughly 3,600 square metres. The interesting limitation is the navigation. Six years after launch the 435X AWD still depends on a physical wire buried around the lawn, with ultrasonic sensors for obstacles and satellite positioning used only for theft tracking and geofencing, not for mapping. Everything smart about it sits in the connectivity layer: a cellular modem, the Automower Connect app, over-the-air firmware updates, smart home integration, PIN code and alarm. At USD 2,999.99 it is the expensive way to solve difficult terrain, and Husqvarna now sells a wire-free successor alongside it rather than in place of it.
