The TM5S is the smallest arm in Techman's S series and the clearest illustration of what that series actually is: not a new machine, but a rebuild of an existing one. Its 946 mm reach is exactly the reach of the TM5-900 the company has sold since 2016, and its 24 kg mass is two kilograms above that arm. What changed sits in the numbers a buyer cares about — the payload went from 4 to 5 kg, and repeatability went from plus/minus 0.05 mm to plus/minus 0.03 mm. The naming changed with it, and the change is easy to trip over. In the old line the model number described the family and a suffix gave the reach, so a TM5-700 and a TM5-900 were the short and long versions of one arm. In the S series the number is the payload in kilograms and the reach is not in the name at all. The consequence is that the TM5S, despite the lower number, reaches almost 200 mm further than the TM7S beside it in the same catalogue. Everything the series added is here in full. Protection is IP65 rather than the IP54 of the older arms, so the machine can be hosed down; the sixth axis spins at 450 rather than 225 degrees per second, which Techman converts into a claimed 25 percent shorter cycle; and the safety package runs to 31 TUV-certified functions at PL d, Cat 3, which the manufacturer says removes the need for a separate safety PLC in the cell. The vision system is built into the wrist, as on every Techman arm — that has been the company's distinguishing feature since 2016, when competitors still sold cameras as an add-on. On the S series it is an AI vision stack rather than a rule-based one: classification, object detection, semantic segmentation and anomaly detection, trained on Techman's own TM AI+ Training Server and used from the same TMflow graphical environment in which the motion is programmed. For the jobs Techman lists against this model — bin picking, PCB handling, screw driving, inspection — the tighter repeatability matters more than the extra kilogram. A 0.03 mm arm can be pointed at connector insertion and small-part assembly that a 0.05 mm arm has to hand off to a fixture.
