Techman TM7S

Techman Robot · Taiwan · 2023

Higher number, shorter arm: the TM7S carries 7 kg but reaches only 758 mm — the compact worker of the S series, and a trap for anyone reading model numbers as sizes.

The TM7S is the short-reach member of Techman's S series and the model that most easily misleads. Its number is higher than the TM5S beside it, but the arm is smaller: 758 mm of reach against 946, and 23 kg of mass against 24. In the S series the digits count kilograms of payload, not centimetres of span, and the two figures do not move together. Read against the older line, the TM7S is the replacement for the TM5-700 that Techman launched in 2016. That arm carried 6 kg over 700 mm and repeated to plus/minus 0.05 mm. The new one carries 7 kg over 758 mm and repeats to plus/minus 0.03 mm — a kilogram more, 58 mm further and a tolerance cut by two fifths, in a package a kilogram lighter than its predecessor. The short arm has a purpose. Cells built around a machine tool door, a test fixture or a conveyor edge are measured in centimetres, and a long arm folded up in a small envelope is slower and less rigid than a short one working near its middle. Techman lists this model against polishing and deburring alongside the usual handling work, which are exactly the tasks where the tool pushes back and reach is not the constraint. The S series equipment is unchanged from model to model: IP65 sealing so the arm can be washed down, a sixth axis raised to 450 degrees per second, 31 TUV-certified safety functions at PL d, Cat 3 that Techman says remove the need for a separate safety PLC, and the wrist camera with an AI vision stack — classification, object detection, semantic segmentation, anomaly detection — trained on the TM AI+ Training Server and driven from TMflow. What the buyer is choosing between, then, is not capability but geometry. The TM5S and the TM7S share their electronics, their software, their sealing and their precision; they differ by 188 mm of reach and 2 kg of payload, in opposite directions.
