Transfers a filmed performance onto a drawn or photographed character, or swaps a character into existing footage - with a separate relighting module so the newcomer matches the light of the scene.
Wan2.2-Animate-14B, released on 19 September 2025, is built on top of the image-to-video model of the same generation and does two related jobs from one set of weights. In animation mode it takes a still character - a drawing, a render, a photograph - and a reference video of a person performing, and makes the character reproduce that performance, body movement and facial expression together. In replacement mode it works the other way round: it substitutes a character into video that already exists, keeping the original scene. Replacement is the harder problem, because a figure pasted into a shot lit differently reads as fake immediately. Alibaba's answer is a separate relighting adapter shipped in the same repository, a LoRA whose only job is to make the inserted character take on the lighting of the surrounding footage. The declared size is 14 billion parameters, while the parameter counter reports 17.3 billion; the difference is the extra modules bundled in the repository, chiefly an XLM-RoBERTa text encoder and the relighting adapter, not a larger video model. In its first year it became the most bookmarked model in the Wan2.2 generation. That popularity is the reason this profile also has to state the obvious risk: a tool that maps one person's movement and expression onto another face is exactly the tool required for a convincing fake. Alibaba's licence forbids uses that harm individuals, and enforcement of an Apache-style licence on downloaded weights is a matter of trust rather than a technical control. A successor, Wan2.2-Animate-2-14B, followed on 7 August 2026 - not a refresh but a redesign, which drops the pose-extraction step this model depends on and feeds the driving video straight into the transformer. It ships in a base and a distilled build, and it does not replace this one: the first generation is still being downloaded an order of magnitude more often.
