A vision-language model has arrived in the robot vacuum, and it changes what the machine is sold on

Narwal put its 2026 flagship, the Flow 2, on sale on 13 April at USD 1,299.99, and the headline claim in the announcement was not a number. It was a vision-language model running on the robot itself. That is a departure. For three years the consumer cleaning market has been sold on a single figure - suction in pascals - and the figure has been climbing faster than any measurable benefit. Our own catalogue now holds machines rated at 22,000, 30,000, 31,000 and 35,000 Pa, all released within months of each other, from four different manufacturers. The Flow 2 sits at 31,000 Pa and Narwal mentions it, but the launch material spends far more space on what the robot understands than on what it pulls. The practical difference is in the kind of mistake the machine can avoid. Obstacle recognition, which every current flagship has, matches an object against a list: a cable, a sock, a pet bowl. A vision-language model is asked to describe the scene instead, which is why Narwal can offer features that a fixed list cannot support - labelling an area in ordinary words and having the robot honour it, or scenario modes for a room with a baby or an animal in it. Two cautions belong here. First, nobody outside the manufacturer has measured whether the language model actually reduces the number of cables swallowed or bowls tipped over; the claim is architectural, not tested. Second, the same product page that specifies mop washing as adaptive between 45 and 80 C advertises 100 C hot water a few screens lower, which is a reminder of how loosely these specifications are written even when they come straight from the maker. What can be said plainly is that the pascal race has stopped being the story. When the top four machines in a category are within 13,000 Pa of one another and none of them publishes an airflow figure alongside it, the number has stopped separating them - and manufacturers have started looking for something else to put on the box.
