Amazon Nova Canvas

Amazon Nova Canvas was announced on 3 December 2024 at re:Invent as the creative half of the first Nova generation, and it was never really pitched as an art model. Its design centre was controlled commercial imagery: text-to-image, but also inpainting, outpainting, background removal, image variation and colour-guided generation, plus conditioning on a reference image through Canny edge maps or human pose. The target customer was a marketing or retail team that already had a product photograph and needed twenty versions of it. The technical envelope is modest by 2026 standards and precisely stated. Prompts are capped at 1,024 characters. Generated images go up to 4.19 million pixels, meaning 2048x2048 or shapes such as 2816x1536; editing tasks allow up to 4,096 pixels on the longest side within the same total pixel budget and an aspect ratio between 1:4 and 4:1. Inputs are PNG or JPEG, and the model prompts in English only. Every image carries an invisible watermark, and Amazon offers a detection API for it — a provenance stance the company adopted before most competitors. What now defines the profile is its ending. Amazon moved Canvas to Legacy on 30 March 2026 and set end-of-life for 30 September 2026, in the same batch as Nova Reel; Nova Premier and Nova Sonic go two weeks earlier. Amazon has not named a Nova 2 image model to replace it. For a first-generation family announced with seven models, that leaves image generation as a capability the company demonstrated, priced, watermarked — and then withdrew.
