FLUX.2

FLUX.2, released on 25 November 2025, is the model that kept Black Forest Labs at the centre of open image generation. The German lab was founded by researchers who had built Stable Diffusion, and its answer to closed image models has consistently been to publish weights that people can actually run. The family ships in four tiers with deliberately different licences. FLUX.2 [pro] is the production API; [flex] is the developer variant with more control over the sampling process; [dev] is the 32-billion-parameter open-weights model on Hugging Face under a non-commercial licence; and [klein] is Apache 2.0 and small enough to generate in under a second on a consumer GPU. Only the last one is fully free for commercial use — a distinction that is easy to miss and matters legally. In capability terms FLUX.2 generates and edits images up to 4 megapixels, and the improvements over FLUX.1 are the unglamorous ones that decide whether a model is usable in production: legible text inside images, colours that match what was asked for, and the same character staying recognisably the same across a series of generations. The line was superseded at the top end in July 2026 by FLUX 3, a multimodal model that adds video, audio and robot-action prediction — but FLUX 3 launched closed, with no downloadable weights, so FLUX.2 [dev] and [klein] remain the versions most people actually run.
