DALL·E 3 was OpenAI's third-generation text-to-image model and, for two years, the public face of AI image generation. It reached ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users in autumn 2023 and arrived in the Images API on 6 November 2023, at OpenAI's first DevDay, where Snap, Coca-Cola and Shutterstock were named among its early users. Its historical significance lies less in picture quality than in obedience. Earlier generators, DALL·E 2 included, treated a prompt as a loose bag of concepts; DALL·E 3 was trained to render what the sentence actually said, including relations between objects, and it was wired directly into ChatGPT, which rewrote a user's short request into a long, detailed prompt on their behalf. That combination — a model that follows instructions plus a chatbot that writes them — is the template every later system, OpenAI's own included, has followed. Its end came in two stages. OpenAI notified developers of the deprecation on 14 November 2025 and removed dall-e-2 and dall-e-3 from the API on 12 May 2026, pointing them to the GPT Image line. The official DALL·E GPT inside ChatGPT survived a few months longer and is being switched off on 30 August 2026, with OpenAI asking users to download their images beforehand. The model is kept in this catalogue as a historical entry: the profile of its successor, GPT Image 2, is where the current capability lives.
