Figure 01
Figure AI · United States · 2023
The first robot from a company founded to build humanoids and nothing else: first steps in May 2023, coffee by October, superseded a year later.
Figure 01 is the machine with which Figure AI announced itself. The company was founded on an unusually narrow premise - build a commercially viable general-purpose humanoid, and do nothing else - and in March 2023 it put a name to the first attempt. The robot took its first steps that May, and by October was being shown walking dynamically, making a cup of coffee after watching a human do it, and moving bins in a mock factory setting. The hardware was built in-house rather than assembled from suppliers, which is the part that mattered for what followed: roughly 1.68 m tall, about 60 kg, 20 kg of payload, some 41 degrees of freedom driven by Figure's own electric actuators, a walking speed near 1.2 m/s and about five hours of runtime. Those are unremarkable numbers today; in 2023 a startup demonstrating them on its own actuators, within months of founding, was not. Figure 01 never went to work. It was a development platform - the machine on which the company proved that its actuator design, its balance control and its learned manipulation stack could exist at all, and on which it negotiated its first industrial partnership. Figure 02 arrived in August 2024 with the cabling inside the limbs, the battery in the torso and triple the onboard compute, and took the BMW assembly-line job that turned the programme into a working deployment. Figure 01 is kept here as the first generation of a line that is now three deep - the demonstrator, not the worker.
