Figure 02

Figure 02 is the second-generation humanoid from Figure AI, unveiled in August 2024, and it matters for one reason above all: it is the machine that stopped demonstrating and started working. Between January and November 2025 a small fleet ran on an active assembly line at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, and the numbers Figure published at the end of that deployment remain the most concrete evidence anyone has offered that a humanoid can be useful in industry. The job was narrow and unforgiving. The robots lifted sheet-metal parts out of bins and placed them onto welding fixtures to a 5 mm tolerance, in about two seconds per part, after which conventional robot arms did the welding. They worked ten-hour shifts, Monday to Friday, every working day - over 1,250 hours of runtime, more than 90,000 parts loaded, a contribution to over 30,000 X3 vehicles and better than 99% placement success per shift. The robots walked an estimated 1.2 million steps, roughly 200 miles, and came home visibly worn. Technically, Figure 02 was a substantial rebuild rather than a refresh. Cabling was routed inside the limbs, the 2.25 kWh battery moved into the torso to fix the centre of mass, and onboard AI compute tripled over Figure 01 on a pair of NVIDIA GPUs. The robot stands 1.68 m and weighs about 70 kg, with 20 kg of payload, roughly five hours of runtime and 16-degree-of-freedom hands rated to 25 kg. Six RGB cameras give 360-degree vision. At launch the robot spoke through an OpenAI-built conversational system; Figure later replaced that stack with its own Helix vision-language-action model, and the BMW deployment ran on Figure's own software. Figure announced the retirement of the whole Figure 02 fleet on 19 November 2025, following the release of Figure 03. The units returned to headquarters, and what was learned from a year of ten-hour shifts went into the design of the successor - which is, in the end, the point of a first working generation.
