Gene.01

Gene.01 is the first robot from Generative Bionics, a Genoa company spun out of the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia and led by Daniele Pucci, previously the researcher behind IIT's ergoCub and the flying humanoid iRonCub. Shown as a concept at CES in January 2026 and completed as a working, fully sensorised platform six months later, it made its public debut at AMD's Advancing AI event in San Francisco on 22-23 July 2026. Its defining feature is skin. Gene.01 carries distributed multimodal tactile sensing across the whole body that registers touch, proximity, force and temperature, so the robot can react before contact happens rather than after - the property that makes working shoulder to shoulder with people plausible. The company describes its approach as physics-native: mechanics, motion and AI were designed together, on the premise that the physics of the body is itself a form of computation. The second idea is modularity. Generative Bionics does not present Gene.01 as a finished product but as an industrial base platform, customised at three levels - the AI, the exterior design and the end effectors - in the way carmakers derive different models from one platform. The first such derivative is being built with the shipbuilder Fincantieri, where the hands are replaced by welding tools for work in shipyards. Logistics, manufacturing, inspection and surveillance of large sites are named as the next targets, healthcare later. The robot's digital twin has been released as open source and published through the standard channels used by robotics developers, which the company says makes Gene.01 the first humanoid distributed that way. Generative Bionics raised a EUR 70 million seed round in December 2025 - USD 81 million as quoted in the English release - led by CDP Venture Capital with AMD Ventures, Duferco, Eni Next, RoboIT and Tether. The company has around 100 staff, close to half of them with doctorates. No datasheet has been published; the figures below are the ones the company has stated publicly and are marked as such.
