GPT Image 1.5

GPT Image 1.5 was released on 16 December 2025 together with chatgpt-image-latest, as the successor to GPT Image 1 and the model behind image generation in ChatGPT. OpenAI described the step forward in terms of control rather than raw quality: better instruction following and closer adherence to the prompt. It is natively multimodal — text and images go in, images and text come out — and it is billed on three separate meters. Text tokens cost $5 per million on input and $10 on output; image tokens cost $8 per million on input and $32 on output; and finished pictures are priced per image and per quality tier, from $0.009 for a low-quality 1024x1024 up to $0.20 for a high-quality 1024x1536 or 1536x1024. The gap between the cheapest and the most expensive single image from the same model is a factor of 22. Its run as the current model was short. GPT Image 2 took over, and on 2 June 2026 OpenAI announced that GPT Image 1.5, gpt-image-1-mini and chatgpt-image-latest all shut down on 1 December 2026, with GPT Image 2 as the replacement.
