Kaleido 9 is the ninth machine in a humanoid programme Kawasaki Heavy Industries started in 2015, and the first the company talks about in terms of leaving the laboratory. It was shown publicly at the International Robot Exhibition in Tokyo on 3 December 2025. It stands 190 cm tall, weighs 99 kg and carries 30 powered axes in the body, with the hands counted separately. The change Kawasaki emphasises is not strength but reaction time. The lower body was rebuilt so that the joints move roughly twice as fast while keeping the same torque. That sounds like a minor gearing decision, and it is the whole point: a humanoid does not fall over because its legs are too weak, it falls over because they arrive too late. Faster legs mean the machine can put a foot down where the fall would otherwise happen. The seventh generation had already added real-time footstep correction in software; the ninth moves the same idea into the hardware. Sensing sits in two places. A stereo camera in the head and a LiDAR unit in the chest feed a running 3D map of the surroundings, which the robot uses to localise itself, avoid people and obstacles and recognise steps on a staircase while walking. When a task needs a human, an operator can take over through a Meta Quest 3 headset rather than a purpose-built console. In demonstrations the robot moved a 30 kg shelving unit and swept alongside a person using an ordinary broom - a deliberate choice to use human tools instead of designing a dedicated end effector for each job. Endurance is the honest weak point. The robot works for roughly 30 minutes at a time, and Kawasaki pairs it with a wheeled platform called the Kaleido Station that carries it over longer distances instead of walking there. The company's own roadmap puts independent operation in factories and other controlled sites around 2030, autonomous work in unstructured environments around 2040, and general-purpose humanoids around 2050. Kawasaki has also said the tenth generation will be somewhat smaller, closer to average human height. The robot is not sold and Kawasaki publishes no datasheet for it; the figures above come from the manufacturer's presentation at the December 2025 exhibition as reported by the Japanese technical press. Where the company gives no number - battery capacity, walking speed, payload carried in the hands - this profile leaves the field empty.
