ARI

ARI is PAL Robotics' social robot, launched in 2019 for reception desks, retail, healthcare and human-robot interaction research. It stands 165 cm tall on a wheeled base, runs 8 to 12 hours on a charge and carries a 10.1-inch touchscreen on its chest for menus, surveys or promotional content. Interaction is the whole point of the machine: expressive eyes, gaze behaviour, light effects and gestures on the output side; face detection, person identification, speech and intent recognition on the input side, with speech synthesis in several languages. The robot runs Ubuntu LTS with a real-time kernel and is meant to be a body for someone else's software - PAL sells it as a platform for embedding customers' own AI and IoT services, and publishes a simulation model and tutorials for the ROS community. ARI was refined through pilots in residential care under the EU SHAPES programme, which is where much of its assistive-companion behaviour comes from.
