PAL Robotics' agile biped: linear actuators, low leg inertia and a ready-made library of reinforcement-learning gaits.
KANGAROO is PAL Robotics' research biped, built in Barcelona around custom linear actuators with integrated force sensors instead of the rotary joints used in the company's earlier TALOS. Moving the actuator mass away from the limbs gives the legs low inertia, which the manufacturer credits for impact resilience and lower energy consumption during dynamic motion. The platform is modular: buyers pick 4, 5 or 7 degrees of freedom per arm (from 14 to 40 in total), a parallel gripper or a five-finger hand, and optional force/torque sensors at the wrists and feet. Two onboard Intel i7 computers run Ubuntu LTS with ROS 2 and PAL OS, with access down to the 2 kHz EtherCAT real-time loop, and PAL ships a library of learned policies covering walking, push recovery, running, jumping and stair climbing, plus MuJoCo models and open-source pipelines for reinforcement learning, motion retargeting and imitation learning. First shown in 2021, KANGAROO went on sale in 2024 and is today the most advanced humanoid in the company's portfolio.
