REEM-C was PAL Robotics' answer to the question of what a European laboratory should walk on. Introduced in 2013 as the company's first fully open, ROS-based humanoid, it stands 165 cm tall, weighs 80 kg and moves 68 degrees of freedom - enough to walk at up to 2.5 km/h, climb stairs and sit down on a chair, which in the early 2010s was still a demonstration rather than a given. Each hand lifts 1 kg with the arm outstretched; torque sensors sit in the ankles and wrists, giving the compliance a walking machine needs to survive contact with the real world. A battery lasts about three hours of walking or six on standby. The software was the point: Linux and Ubuntu with a complete ROS stack, out-of-the-box walking, grasping, whole-body control and text to speech, plus a simulation model published on the ROS wiki so a lab could work on the robot before owning one. PAL sold REEM-C to universities as a teaching and research platform for years and much of the company's later work on TALOS and KANGAROO grew out of it. The manufacturer now treats REEM-C as a legacy machine outside its current line-up; the profile is kept here as the historical record it deserves.
