PAL Robotics' modular research workhorse: a mobile manipulator ordered with none, one or two 7-DoF arms, a lifting torso and an open ROS software stack.
TIAGo is the mobile manipulator that made PAL Robotics a fixture of European robotics labs. On the market for around a decade, it combines navigation, perception, manipulation and human-robot interaction on a single wheeled platform that customers configure to order: no arms, one arm or two (the two-armed configuration is sold as TIAGo++), a parallel gripper, a Robotiq 2F-85/2F-140, a vacuum ePick or PAL's own series-elastic gripper, a differential or omnidirectional base, and standard or upgraded onboard computing. The 7-degree-of-freedom arm carries 3 kg excluding the end-effector and its compliance makes it safe to work next to people; a lifting torso moves the robot's total height between 110 and 145 cm on a 54 cm circular footprint. One battery gives 4-5 hours of operation, two give 8-10. Software is the real selling point: TIAGo runs Ubuntu LTS with a real-time kernel and a full ROS stack - whole-body control, an advanced navigation and grasping package, an animation interface and visual programming - with an open-source simulation and a Docker image that let a lab test navigation and manipulation before the robot arrives. PAL counts more than 40 collaborative projects and over a hundred citations built on the platform, and it is a regular entrant in RoboCup@Home and similar competitions.
