TIAGo Head is the unusual product in PAL Robotics' catalogue: not a robot that moves, but the part that talks. Sold as a standalone platform for human-robot interaction research, it packs into 45 cm of height and 5.75 kg an i7 computer with 16 GB of RAM, a 10-inch touchscreen serving as the face, two degrees of freedom for head motion, an RGB-D camera, a four-microphone array and 4 W loudspeakers. The perception stack is what a social-robotics lab would otherwise spend a year assembling: 3D face and skeleton tracking, emotion and gesture recognition, speech synthesis and recognition in more than twenty languages, and a multilingual chatbot driven by large language models, with programmable LEDs and configurable facial expressions on the output side. PAL made two decisions that matter for research use - processing runs locally, so recordings of people need not leave the machine, and the software is open and ROS 2-based, with a web interface, visual programming and API access. The head also ships with integrations for PsychoPy and the MATLAB Psychophysics Toolbox, which says plainly who it was built for: experimental psychologists as much as roboticists. The manufacturer now treats TIAGo Head as a legacy platform outside its current offer; its capabilities live on in the head of TIAGo Pro.
