Optimus Gen 2 is the second-generation prototype of Tesla's bipedal humanoid, shown in a demonstration video published by Tesla on 13 December 2023. It was the first Optimus built entirely around actuators and sensors designed in-house rather than off-the-shelf parts. Tesla listed four headline changes over the previous prototype: a 10 kg reduction in total weight, a 30% faster walking speed, a 2-DoF actuated neck, and completely new hands with 11 degrees of freedom, faster actuation and tactile sensing on every finger — demonstrated in the video by picking up an egg without cracking it. The feet were reshaped with articulated toe sections and force/torque sensors to improve balance and full-body control. The machine was never sold. It served as the platform on which Tesla moved Optimus from a stage demo into factory trials, and it is the generation seen in most of Tesla's 2024 material. Later prototypes superseded it. Tesla has never published a datasheet for Optimus, so figures for height, mass and battery capacity in this profile come from the company's AI Day presentation of the first-generation machine and are noted as such; press figures that circulate for Gen 2 have no primary source.
